After conference visits

For those of you who want to extend their Graz experience, we will offer two walking tours (Friday afternoon, September 6th) and a guided tour to the Lurgrotte, Austria’s largest dripstone cave (Saturday morning/noon, September 7th). The excursions are not included in the registration fee. A detailed list including the duration and prices can be found below:

Guided Walking Tours on Friday (September 6th) afternoon:
  • City Tour Graz – Discover Graz (2h, 6-15€/person – depends on final number of participants)

Graz is a city full of history and cultural treasures to be discovered. A walk through the Old Town is like a journey through time, taking you through centuries of architecture and art. The romantic alleys, Gothic churches and Baroque courtyards will enchant you and take you back to times long past. Experience the unique flair of the city, which is characterised by the perfect combination of tradition and modernity. An experienced guide will lead you through the city centre and tell you not only interesting facts about the sights, but also entertaining anecdotes and "Gschichterln". This will make the tour an unforgettable experience and you will understand why Graz's Old Town has been declared a World Heritage Site.

  • City Tour Graz – The Schlossberg in Graz (2h, 6-15€/person – depends on final number of participants)

Situated at a mere 123 m above sea level, the Schlossberg still looks down on the main square of the city and is already a highland in its own right. Absolutely unmissable: the clock tower with its unique mechanism as seen from the inside. Your guide will tell you exactly about the mystery behind the back-to-front hands. Even though it unfortunately no longer stands, the castle still continues to be regarded as the most impregnable fortress of all time, which even Napoleon could not conquer. Thanks to the citizenry of Graz, what remains are Graz's emblematic clock tower and bell tower with the “Liesl” – the third largest bell in Styria. Afterwards, you can enjoy a "stand-up drink" (optional) up on the hill and take in the views of the city's unique roofscape.

There are four ways to get to the top of the 473-metre high Schlossberg:
    • By foot via the 260 steps of the Felsensteig from Schlossbergplatz.
    • Alternatively, you can find paths leading to the Schlossberg from Karmeliterplatz or Wickenburggasse.
    • By taking the Schlossberg Funicular (extra costs).
    • By using the Schlossberg Lift (extra costs).
Trip on Saturday (September 7th) morning:
  • Lurgrotte – Austria's largest dripstone cave (entrance in Peggau, cave trip starts at 11:00am, 9€ entrance fee)

The Lurgrotte cave in Peggau is nature's art gallery where you can see how nature forms wondrous sculptures out of lime. It is Austria’s largest and most beautiful cave spectacle with rapids streaming through and lime formations taking shape as halls, rock cathedrals, grottos and gorges.

Peggau is situated where the Lurbach stream, whose exact course through the mountain is still unknown, comes to the surface again. From there you can reach the impressively illuminated "rain grotto" and the imposing "prince". Archaeological finds have proved that cave bears and, about 50,000 years ago, even Neandertals found shelter in the outer parts of Lurgrotte. It remains unknown, if they, like today's visitors, appreciated the constant temperature of +10°C and the high humidity of 97-98% beneficial for the respiratory system.

To reach the cave, we will take a train from Graz Hauptbahnhof (central railway station) to Peggau (tickets max. 8€/person/direction, ca. 20min) and then have a 15min walk (1km) to the cave. The entrance fee (9€) includes a 2 km guided tour through Austria's largest dripstone cave, a visit to the cave museum and the Peggau Prehistoric Museum. A joint lunch at a restaurant close by is possible.
