Outreach on the African Continent
This presentation outlines NoRCEL’s expanding outreach initiatives across the African continent, with a particular focus on the implementation and future development of astroscience education on the African Continent. Since 2015, NoRCEL has led and supported a series of public engagement activities, capacity-building workshops, and teacher training sessions in countries including Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Nigeria, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. These programmes aim to stimulate critical and creative thinking, inspire future scientists, and promote inclusion in astrobiology and related disciplines.
A flagship initiative, titled “NoRCEL’s Longitudinal Studies Pertaining to the Effectiveness of Astroscience Programmes in South Africa,” is a proposed five-year collaboration with the South African National Research Foundation (NRF). This study will assess the long-term impact of targeted astroscience interventions at the secondary school level, measuring conceptual understanding and engagement through structured learning sessions, assessments, and feedback mechanisms.
NoRCEL's outreach philosophy integrates both traditional and modern pedagogical tools—from hands-on experimentation to digital learning platforms—to create adaptable, inclusive, and culturally relevant educational content. Emphasis is placed on empowering both students and teachers, bridging gaps between scientific institutions and local communities, and aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in quality education and reducing inequality.
This presentation will reflect on lessons learned, structural challenges, and evolving strategies, while highlighting the critical importance of equitable astroscience education in shaping Africa’s scientific future.
